Internships |

Internships provide valuable experiences in the work place. They may
be obtained while in school or while employed in full-time DoD positions.
They range in length, but are generally for a period of two years. Internship
programs are operated by each DoD agency, each with its own specific requirements.
The internships are described below.
Internships are government-wide recruitment programs targeted toward individuals at various levels of secondary education. Agencies may appoint at GS-5, GS-7 or GS-9 levels. Merit principles and veterans' preference are applicable. Interns may be non-competitively converted to the competitive service upon completion of the program.
Federal Career Intern Program
Provides agencies authority to recruit and attract exceptional individuals
into a variety of occupations at grade levels GS-5, 7, and 9. In general,
individuals are appointed to a 2-year internship. Upon successful completion
of the internships, the interns may be eligible for permanent placement
within an agency. Individuals interested in Career Intern opportunities

Department of Defense Intern Programs
Provides the Department authority to create internship programs for a
variety of occupations. Each Component and Defense agency maintains information
about its intern program on its websites. Some programs applicable throughout
the Department are highlighted below:
- Defense Career Intern Program (DCIP): Provides the Department
of Defense authority to hire individual(s) with a variety of experiences,
academic disciplines or competencies. The program provides a two-year
internship beginning at up to a GS-9 grade level. DCIP employees may be

- Achieving the Financial Management Vision: Provides Air Force internship
programs for business students. This program serves to promote greater
understanding and appreciation for the importance, sophistication, and
diversity of military operations, especially among those who are likely
to be the country's future business leaders. Graduate students completing
the first of two years in their MBA program intern in the Air Force Budget
office, the Financial Management Transformation Program Management Office, the Financial Management Workforce Management Directorate, or the Air
Force Cost Analysis Agency.
- U.S. Air Force Palace Acquire Intern Program: Provides full-time
employment with a structured 2-3 year training program. This program provides expedited,
performance-based promotions in approximately 20 diverse occupations.

- U.S. Air Force Copper Cap Program: Provides a managed program designed
to train college graduates and place civilians within the Air Force work

- Army Training and Leadership Development: Provides progressive and sequential
leadership training from the entry level to the Senior Executive Service (SES). The curriculum
includes mandatory training for Army civilians at each level (Intern, Supervisor, Manager

- Department of the Army Management Intern Program: Provides full-time
employment at entry grade levels (GS- 5 and 7) for development to mid-level management
positions (GS-9 or GS-11) in 22 career programs in over 150 different occupations. At
the conclusion of the program, the graduating intern is prepared for the challenges
faced by mid-level managers working with the Department of Army.

- Department of Navy Financial Management Trainee: Provides training at the entry level preparing employees to become federal financial professionals in financial management positions at Navy/Marine Corps activities and commands throughout the U.S.

- The Human Resources (HR) Career Development Program: Announces intern
positions annually, usually around September/October.

- The Naval Acquisition Intern Program (NAIP): Prepares interns to assume
some of the Department's top acquisition workforce positions. Interns participate
in a three year training and education program that is tailored to one of six career
fields: Business/Cost Estimating and Financial Management, Contracting,
Communications/Computer Systems, Acquisition Logistics, Systems Planning, Research,
Development and Engineering, or Manufacturing, Production and Quality Assurance.
Positions are located throughout the United States, however, a majority are located
within the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, California, Pennsylvania, Maryland,
Virginia and Florida.

Student Career Educational Program (SCEP)
Provides Federal employment opportunities to students who are enrolled
or accepted for enrollment as degree seeking students taking at least
a half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited
high school, technical, vocational, 2 or 4 year college or university,
graduate or professional school. Students in the SCEP gain exposure to
public service while enhancing their educational goals and shaping their
